When do your sugar cravings hit? Perhaps it’s in the morning when you’re looking for a boost to help you begin your day. Or maybe your sweet tooth kicks in when the mid-afternoon slump strikes. Sugar cravings typically signal one of two things: your body is tired and needs an energy boost or you’re seeking the feel-good high that consuming sugar facilitates. If your sweet tooth is calling the shots a little too often lately, consider these four healthier ways to satisfy cravings.
REACH FOR FRUIT WHEN SUGAR CRAVINGS STRIKE
There are few things as satisfying as biting into a juicy, ripe orange or enjoying your favorite kind of fresh fruit from your local farmers market. Consider keeping a fruit salad (freshly made, not canned) in the fridge at work. This way, when that afternoon sugar craving comes calling, you can combat it with a naturally sweet alternative that also provides a refreshing pop of vitamins and minerals. For evening or weekend cravings, try freezing grapes or mangoes (it’s a thing, we swear!) for a satisfying, cool treat. It’s like sorbet, but healthier!
PUT A HEALTHIER TWIST ON TRADITIONAL FAVORITES
Love chocolate? Silly question, right? One of our favorite ways to satisfy chocolate cravings, and feel healthy while doing it is chocolate avocado pudding. Yes, you heard right, avocado. Avocados are high in omega 3 fatty acids (the good fat), contain about 4 grams of protein and are a good source of vitamin K and fiber. Pair it with chocolate, and you have a recipe for a delicious, nutritious dessert. Here’s how to make chocolate avocado pudding:
Chocolate Avocado Pudding
- 1 avocado, pitted and peeled
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon liquid vanilla or chocolate stevia
- non-dairy whipped topping, optional
Process in a food processor or high-powered blender until smooth. Enjoy!
SWAP THE SODA FOR INFUSED WATER
If you’re in need of a refreshing drink that will truly leave you feeling healthy, elevated and cool, swap the soda for spruced up water. Keep a jug of ice water in the fridge and add slices of your favorite fruits and veggies–lemons, oranges, limes, watermelon–the combinations are endless. You’ll feel like you’re visiting a luxury spa or hotel every time you reach for a refreshing glass of water. Another way to quickly infuse your water with a fresh new taste is to chop fruit up, put it in an ice tray with water and freeze. When soda cravings strike, simply pop ice cubes into an ice-cold glass of water and enjoy. Ahhh.
